Years ago my father-in-law gave to me a moving poem encouraging those grieving the loss of a loved one to go ahead and miss them. The poem's message was that as we mourn our departed loved ones (for how could we not?) ever remembering the love we shared, we honor them best by living and burying our sorrows into doing good. The import of the poem is that in our sorrow those we love are revered in our living life as it befits those who trust the Master's plan. The poem in hand, my father-in-law asked if I could "put music to it". Believing he wrote the poem I said yes. Only later did I find that he had not written, but had heard the poem, of unknown authorship, read at a funeral and bringing comfort to those in attendance. Over the years I have played this song at funerals or for the hurting, and have seen these words, balm-like, touch hurting hearts. We take for granted how fleeting are our lives and time together, how quickly years become aged pictures calling to memory. For those grieving who may here encounter this song, I pray the Father of mercies, the God of all comfort, speak in the meaning and the melody to bring peace and console your heart. In Jesus Name.
