Description
Martina Sorbara had ‘em. Even before starting on “Hello” and the very first drumbeat of Dragonette’s performance at the Radio Awards, during Canadian Music Week 2012. Her infectious smile and cheeky, Ronnie Spector-meets-Lene Lovich voice, coupled with the entire band’s obvious pleasure at playing live, had the crowd on their side from the start.
The song itself, which charted world-wide for French producer Martin Solveig, was a triumph of Martina’s personality. Although it rolled along like a sixties Girl Group song with House Production, she overpowered the many hooks throughout, and at one point asked the audience if they’d clap along with her. “Or will I be clapping alone?” A kind of an on-stage version of a trust fall.
Toronto synth-pop group Dragonette was formed in 2005 by Martina Sorbara, Dan Kurtz and Joel Stouffer. Since then, they’ve won a JUNO, and released albums, singles and Band/DJ collaborations that have charted around the world. Their best known song, “Hello”, charted in 6 countries.
